The Tortuguero node can be visualized as consisting of two large sectors of the northeastern Caribbean with distinctive characteristics that each offer their own opportunities for wildlife observation thanks to their distinct habitats and altitudinal ranges. These are the Northern Caribbean Plains and the intermediate elevations along the slopes of Volcán Turrialba.
The most coastal region is comprised of the Tortuguero Plain, an area of lowlands with expansive continental wetlands (rivers, lakes, freshwater marshes, deltas) and small hill ranges with altitudes of up to 311 masl.
The high degree of endemism of the Caribbean region of Central America, this region is home to species such as the Nicaraguan seed-finch (Sporophila nuttingi) and the black-throated wren (Pheugopedius atrogularis).
