 Historical sites in Cahuita-Puerto Viejo
4. Home of Danilo Hurtado Amador
Located 200 meters from the crossroads to Puerto Viejo on the road to Bribrí.
The house was built in the early 1970s by Elías Cruz. Danilo
Hurtado Amador has been the owner since 2004. It is a building
made from sweetwood with very simple characteristics,
influenced by the Caribbean Victorian style. It was erected on
concrete bases and its walls are made of wooden slats. It has
a front balcony with a handrail, the doors and windows of the
corridor are fitted with mullions, which facilitate internal ventilation. The windows on the sides have wooden shutters for protection and contain no glass. The roof is made of galvanized iron sheets in two layers.
5. Home of Jorge Brown Hudson
Located in front of the Police Headquarters of Puerto Viejo. The house was built in the 1930s by a schoolteacher from Jamaica. It was later acquired by his nephew George Gordon, who was a teacher and father of the current owner, Jorge Brown Hudson. The small wooden building in the Victorian style has an area of about 70 m2 on a large property of 800 m2. It is elevated above the ground on wooden stilts and has a front corridor with a handrail and slatted walls.
6. Casa de la Cultura:
Located 100 m east and 100 m north of the Police Headquarters of Puerto Viejo. Puerto Viejo’s Casa de la Cultura was built in 2000 by the Puerto Viejo Community Development Association and JAPDEVA, which contributed materials and labor. In spite of being a very recent building, stylistic elements typical of Victorian architecture were used in order to reflect the cultural characteristics of the area.
It has lattice windows, wooden bases that elevate it from the
ground and a galvanized iron gable roof. A beautiful overhanging
corridor, protected by eaves and equipped with a geometrically designed railing, extends in front of the main façade and on one of its sides.
