Caribbean music and dance. There are multiple types, though the most popular is the calypso which is part of the country’s cultural heritage. Other rhythms of the Costa Rican Caribbean include sinkit, quadrille dances, son and comparsas, as well as gospel, jazz, soul, hip-hop, reggae and soca. Read more
Bulevar de Limón. This beautiful pedestrian walkway extends over four blocks of Avenida 2 in the city of Limón. It begins on the west at Calle 4 and ends on the east in front of the Tajamar, where there is an amphitheater with a view of Quiribrí Island
Handicrafts. The Caribbean is home to traditional indigenous crafts such as basketry and carved jícaros, traditional crafts such as sewing traditional costumes used in the Grand Parade and other celebrations, the Caribbean wooden quijongo, and contemporary textile crafts that employ silver, coconut, stone and recycled materials such as plastic. Isla Quiribrí (Uvita). This island was declared a National Monument in 1985, as it was the first place visited by Christopher Columbus in 1502 during his fourth voyage to the Caribbean coast. Because of the wealth he was shown by the indigenous people – or perhaps because of the natural exuberance of the area – Columbus called these shores Costa Rica, meaning “Rich Coast”.
Emblematic towns. These communities illustrate the multiethnic and multicultural composition of the country’s Caribbean region. These towns include WESTFALIA (German origin), LIVERPOOL (English), CAHUITA (Miskito), BRI (indigenous), ÁFRICA (African). Read more
Carnivals of Limón. The Limón Carnival is always held during the week of October 12 each year. This is also the date when the Day of Cultures is celebrated. This event has come to generate significant tourist interest and captures the local and national imagination. The activities include a parade with floats and bands, masquerades, concerts with national and international groups, the dragon dance by the Chinese community.
Grand Parade. A traditional festival celebrated every August 31 as part of the Día de la Persona Negra y la Cultura Afrocostarricense, which recognizes the cultural contribution of Afrodescendants, their traditions and the struggle for the vindication of their rights. It consists of a parade in which Limón’s inhabitants celebrate the values and tradition of black culture with dances, music, songs, floats and traditional costumes. Read more

Visual arts of Limón. An important group of painters in Limón interpret scenes of the urban and rural landscape of the Caribbean as well as other elements of its cultural diversity. Many of them meet or have their workshops in Guápiles or in downtown Limón, as is the case of the centrally located Pasaje Cristal Gallery, located in a heritage building on the Bulevar de Limón.
