Featured species
Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas)
One of the initial reasons creating the Tortuguero National Park is that the beaches of Tortuguero are one of the species’ main nesting beaches worldwide. Adult green turtles grow up to 1.5 meters in length and have an average weight of 68-190 kg. The average carapace length of the species is 78-112 cm (31-44 in). Exceptional specimens may weigh 315 kg (694 pounds) or even more.
Some characteristics of the species include an oval shell of variable color, four lateral scutes and a pair of prefrontal scales. The turtles nest mainly on the country’s Atlantic coast with a peak in nesting activity from June to October. Tortuguero is one of the best places to see the nesting and hatching displays up close.
Caimán (Caiman cocodilus)
This species is present along the Tortuguero
canals, and can sometimes be observed.
Mono Colorado (Ateles geoffroyi) and Mono Cariblanca (Cebus capucinus)
One of the most striking and dispersing species of plants.
Leatherback sea turtle

The leatherback, it is the largest sea turtle in the world. Some specimens can reach a length of up to 2.5 meters and a weight of 700 kg.
