Barra del Colorado Protected Areas
How to get there
The coastal sector of Barra del
Colorado can only be accessed by air or sea. Airlines reach the area in 35 minutes from San José.
Access by land is as follows: leaving from
the province of San José, take route 32 to the Santa Clara Service Station. From there, take route 247 towards the community of Cariari de Pococí; when you reach the Surá crossing, turn left, passing by the Palmitas Service Station. Stay on route 247, which will become a gravel road for the last 32 km until you reach the community of Puerto Lindo where you can access the boat service (botebus), which will take approximately 1 hour to reach the coastal sector.
From Cariari, you can use public
transportation to get to Puerto Lindo. The bus service offers two schedules per day, one at 4:30 am and another at 2:00 pm. The buses take 2 hours and are connected with the entrance of the river ferry service in Puerto Lindo.

Coastal Sector. In the communities of Barra Norte and Barra Sur, you can find lodging services and a variety of tours through the canals and lagoons. In addition, the local restaurants offer delicious dishes from the area, with products from the coast of the catch of the day. Inland Sector. On the way to Puerto Lindo, rural tourism initiatives have been developed that will surprise you with their trails, local products, beautiful internal lagoons and crystal-clear rivers.

By paying your entrance fee, you contribute to the local economy and the conservation of natural resources. Cerro Tortuguero belongs to the National Conservation System and the administration of the Barra del Colorado National Wildlife Refuge has decided to grant management to the San Francisco de Tortuguero Community Development Association, as a strategy by which the income generated by visitors is invested directly in the community.
In addition, visitors (both Costa Ricans and foreigners) must pay a fee of $5 per person for the sustainable management of the site, provided by the Asociación de Desarrollo Integral de San Francisco (San Francisco Integral Development Association).
• Guiding, transportation and additional services are sold separately and must be arranged with the guide or operator.
• Payment by credit card available (foreigners should remember to report that they are abroad).
