Aviarios del Caribe
The Sloth Sanctuary, formerly called “Refugio de Vida Silvestre Aviarios del Caribe”, was created on May 27, 1997 by Executive Decree No. 25140-MINAE. It was included in the National Parks and Privately Owned Protected Areas Regulation when it was discovered to be an important migratory bird passage site.
It was originally founded by Judy Avey-Arroyo, an American from Alaska, and her Costa Rican husband, Luis Arroyo, who bought the property to offer bird tours on the Río Estrella, hence its original name. The Government of Costa Rica declared it a private biological reserve in 1975. Today, it is the only sloth research center in the world and is dedicated to rescuing orphaned, injured or abandoned sloths. In addition to this sloth refuge, the site protects a good number of migratory birds and other animals of the canals and lagoons of the lowlands of the coastal southern Caribbean.
The main objective of the sanctuary is to educate visitors about these creatures, to observe them and even take pictures with them.
The refuge offers guided tours, bird and wildlife observation in general, along with white sand beaches and visits to the waterways. It is located 35 km south of Puerto Limón and 11 km from Cahuita.
