Liberia is the first canton of Guanacaste. Its main tourism sites are Rincón de la Vieja National Park, the coastal region around Playa Cabuyal, Iguanita and Nacazcolo.
It is home to the Papagayo Tourism Pole, a model of tourism development in Costa Rica.

- Via the Carretera Interamericana, 45 kilometers from the Peñas Blancas border crossing on the Nicaraguan border.
