Introduction
The canton of Bagaces has been called the “cradle of Guanacaste ecology” due to its great natural wealth and diverse flora and fauna.
The fourth canton of the province of Guanacaste, Bagaces is located between the cantons of Liberia to the northwest, Santa Cruz and Carrillo to the south, Cañas to the east, and the province of Alajuela to the north. It is comprised of the districts of Bagaces, Fortuna, Mogote and Río Naranjo.
The canton of Bagaces is named in honor of the chief Bagatzi, who lived in the region during the Spanish colonial era in the 16th century. The name means “Baga (reeds, tall grass) and tzi (place),” which translates as “Place of the Tall Grass”.
Located just north of Palo Verde National Park, the town of Bagaces is the capital of the canton of the same name. Its proximity to the Miravalles Volcano (2028 masl) – the “highest peak of the Cordillera de Guanacaste” – means that residents and visitors can enjoy water parks and thermal spas throughout the year, which have been able to complement their offer with activities such as ziplining, hikes to the volcano, hanging bridges, volcanic clay baths, observation of flora, birds and mammals, mountain biking, and many other activities.
Four kinds of clean energy emanate from the slopes of the Miravalles Volcano, which the Costa Rican power authority, ICE, has been able to capture through its geothermal project and solar farm. Within a 20 km radius, wind and hydro power further complement these clean power projects.
