Gandoca–Manzanillo Wildlife Reserve
Tour of the Gandoca Lagoon
Experience one of the greatest treasures of the Caribbean. The Gandoca Lagoon is part of the wetlands of the Gandoca- Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge and is an important breeding ground for tarpon and manatees. The lagoon also contains the only natural mangrove oyster beds on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica.

This protected area encompasses both marine and coastal areas. While most of the area is designated for conservation, there are also some residences set aside for ecotourism. It has unique ecosystems, including the orey tree, the only mangrove forest on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, as well as tropical forests and coral reefs. Three species of dolphins can be observed and it is home to 358 identified bird species, of which almost 40% of the
species are considered rare. Many of the birds migrate from North America. In addition, its beaches are often the nesting destination for sea turtles, with four species nesting here.

Aviarios del Caribe is a model integrated center that works on the research, protection and rehabilitation of sloths. By visiting this sanctuary, you will learn about these creatures, their habitat and the dangers they face in the wild. Afterwards, you will travel along the Estrella River by boat and you will be able to see sloths in their natural environment, as well as birds, butterflies, monkeys and other species.
