How to get there?
La Fortuna de San Carlos is in the northern part of Costa Rica and can be accessed by different routes and from different destinations. Likewise, you can use several transportation options to get to La Fortuna, whether you rent a car or book a private transportation or shuttle service.
From San José:
Route 1 is the most used route. It is through San Ramón and there is a second route through Zarcero. In either case, it is about 2.5 hour drive from La Fortuna to San José.
Route 4 through Braulio Carrillo and Sarapiquí, allows you to travel to the Central Valley or to the Caribbean.
During the trip there are several things you can do or visit, for example you could go to Naranjo and be a part of a coffee tour, or you could pass through very picturesque towns like Sarchí and stop at the Zarcero park.
From Monteverde:
If you are coming or going to Monteverde from La Fortuna, you can take the traditional route, passing through Tilarán, which will take approximately 3 hours. You could also take the jeep boat jeep option, which takes you from your hotel in La Fortuna to your hotel in Monteverde and includes a small boat ride on Lake Arenal.
From Liberia Guanacaste
The most used route is passing through Cañas and Tilarán, that takes about 2.5 hours and during your trip you could contemplate the Arenal Lake.
It is important to mention that you can also use public bus transportation to get to La Fortuna, although it takes longer, and you may have to make one or two bus stops along the way.
