Culture in the Caribbean
Return to map
Learn and enjoy the history of the Caribbean, the conquest that started with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1502 to Quiribri Island (Uvita Island), the traditions of the local inhabitants, migrants (China, Jamaica, Europe) and an important indigenous heritage, which today
is concentrated in the region of Gran Talamanca, where Bribri and Cabécar indigenous populations live in the highlands and foothills, as well as in the lower areas of Kekoldí.
The Costa Rican Caribbean has been changed by a diverse set of historical legacies that make it distinct from the rest of the country. Limón is bilingual, Protestant, cosmopolitan and heir to various cultures such as African, Chinese, English, indigenous and Spanish; its roots are marked by the importance of its cultural diversity that dates back centuries.
The region has several tourist centers, each of which has its own natural and cultural charms, with a very diverse range of services, small hotels and charming restaurants. The list below explores the five most important tourist hubs:
City of Limón
From the city of Limón, it is easy to visit any tourist destination in the Caribbean, both south and north. The old town is full of interesting architecture that tells some of the city’s history. One of the main attractions of the city of Limón is Uvita Island, located just offshore, where visitors can snorkel, hike and enjoy beautiful views. In the city, meanwhile, activities include city tours through the heritage buildings, as well as tasting the delicious Caribbean cuisine and looking through the handicrafts.
Tortuguero
One of the most visited sites in the country, Tortuguero is famous for its natural beauty, biodiversity and, of course, the sea turtles that come to the beach to lay eggs in Tortuguero National Park, which is located in the northern part of the canton.
Visitors can tour the river channels, observe the great variety of flora and fauna, witness the nesting of sea turtles and observe an incredible diversity of bird and mammal species.
