In the foothills of the mountains, south of Guápiles and Guácimo, the Pococí and Guácimo Aquifers Protected Zone has protected its valuable and fragile forest systems,
rivers, waterfalls and more than fifty springs since its creation in 1987. These two forested areas have also become the core zone of the 25,898-hectare Aquifer Biological Corridor, whose main attraction is the rivers that flow through its territory and its lush tropical forests.
In order to promote a harmonious use of the land in this area, the “Ruta del Agua” (Water Route) was created in 2019, an organization made up of more than 40 companies in 12 communities. It includes all the territories south of route 32, a road that goes from the Río Costa Rica in the Guápiles district of the Pococí canton to La Argentina in the Pocora district of the Guácimo canton. In this vast region, located amidst the foothills of the Volcán Turrialba, there is a wide range of rural tourism options.
This includes activities such as guided visits to integrated farms (with crops like coffee or a cocoa and chocolate tour), experiences in handling farm animals or organic crops, hiking that includes walks to rivers or waterfalls, the a relaxing trip to a botanical garden to watch birds and plants, and getting to know the local culture by eating in restaurants serving traditional food. These areas also include experiences such as recreational tilapia fishing and shopping for handicrafts made by local artisans. Be lulled to sleep by frogs, leave stress behind while soaking in a river pool, breathe pristine air, observe birds like toucans and macaws, or wake up at dawn to the song of hundreds of birds. These experiences in the fresh mountain air are part of a unique experience that allows human beings to get in touch with nature.
