Cultural Heritage
The Guanacaste region is home to five museums: The Casona de Santa Rosa Historical Museum in La Cruz, the Museum of Guanacaste in Liberia, the Señor de la Agonía Museum of Religious Art in Liberia, the Museum of the Sabanero in the Liberia Casa de la Cultura, and the Eco Museum of the Mines in Abangares.
Guanacaste cuisine: In Guanacaste, you can savor exquisite dishes with pre-Columbian and colonial influences, made from corn, rice, beef, pork and poultry, as well as fish and seafood. The Altura Guanacasteca also has various types of dairy products and a sweet-making tradition. There are specific areas where a large number of restaurants and sodas can be found: between the Lagarto River and Limonal, there are many restaurants and sodas with cuisine from Guanacaste and elsewhere. The city of Liberia also offers a wide variety of contemporary cuisine, while beach towns – especially those in the Cuajiniquil area – boast a wide variety of seafood dishes. More information here.
Heritage architecture: Mid-19th century houses made from adobe and bahareque can till be observed in Liberia. A distinctive element of Liberian and Guanacaste architecture are the sun doors located in corner houses, which consist of a double door separated by a corner column. The Guanacaste hacienda marks another type of construction, with notable examples including Hacienda Santa Rosa, La Casona Hacienda Las Animas de La Cruz and others. There are also houses, schools and other buildings made of wood. More information
Archaeology: In Guanacaste there are many archaeological findings from various periods that can be seen in petroglyphs throughout the province, including the Farallón de Cañas.
Festive activities and celebrations: Throughout the year there are religious, popular, civic, and other festivities from the culture of the Guanacaste hacienda, as well as festivals and other non- heritage artistic activities. These include rodeos, Parade of Horsemen, the Coyolera and the Parranda. More information
Guanacaste music: The first musical instruments were the ocarinas or whistles, rattles and drums or atabales, of indigenous origin. Later came the quijongo, the juco, the carraca and the marimba. This latter instrument is the highlight of a number of artistic and cultural activities. Traditional Guanacaste folk music is closely linked to the marimba, the guitar and bands that feature wind instruments. Among the most popular musical genres are the parranderas, the punto or son suelto, and the tambito; but there are also marches, boleros, waltzes and more. Currently, there are a great number of musicians influenced by traditional and contemporary expressions. More information
Handicrafts: This region of Guanacaste is known for traditional pottery from La Cruz and woodwork in several cantons, especially in fine carpentry, marimbas and tools such as bateas. Hacienda culture fosters the crafts of saddlery and horsehair handicrafts, among others. Another handicraft from La Cruz is the weaving of majagua. There are also traditional crafts such as sewing that are now expressed in contemporary forms that
