But fish are there year-round, and it’s mostly a matter of weather conditions, which can change overnight. The rainy season begins in mid-May, then the action slows down for a while due to the amount of sediment discharged by the rivers.
Some hotels in this area offer complete packages, including transportation from San José, comfortable rooms, meals, fishing boats and guides. As there are no roads in this area, it can only be accessed by domestic flights or boats that travel through the canals of Tortuguero National Park.
There are also several tour operators whose vessels travel by river or by sea.
The northern part of the province is one of the most popular areas for sport fishing in all of Limón. This area is where you can find two incredible protected areas: Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado, which offer many opportunities for fishing enthusiasts. Sport fishing in Barra de Parismina is mainly concerned with the number one angling fish, the Atlantic tarpon. The species is highly sought after, with people coming from far away to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica in search of the fish. This species grows to incredible sizes, measuring up to 2.5 m in length, one of the largest trophies that anglers can hope for.
This type of fishing can be done mostly from a boat or from the shore at the mouths of Barra de Parismina and Barra de Jalova, where there are good odds that fishers will encounter the species.
